Symptoms of Dry Mouth

Saliva is the mouth’s best defense against tooth decay because it neutralizes the acids produced by bacteria. Saliva also helps us to chew, swallow and taste our food. Xerostomia is the scientific term for the condition more commonly known as dry mouth. It can occur when the salivary glands are not working properly. This lack of saliva in the mouth is not a disease, but rather a symptom of a medical disorder or a side effect of certain medications or medical treatments.

Some of the symptoms of Dry Mouth are:

  • Frequent thirst
  • Dry, sticky feeling in the mouth
  • Frequently waking with a sore throat and dry nasal passages
  • Bad breath
  • Cracked Lips
  • Mouth sores

If you are suffering from dry mouth, speak to your dentist. He or she may be able to recommend ways to relieve your discomfort. Increasing your water intake, eliminating certain foods from your diet, or perhaps a switch in medications may help significantly.
