Oral Cancer Screening

Dentists can be the first line of defense in detecting oral cancers. A screening for signs of oral cancer as part of a regular dental check-up can aid in early detection and most of these cancers can be more successfully treated if discovered early. Your dentist can perform an examination of your mouth, tongue, glands and oral tissues to check for any abnormalities.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, close to 50,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral and oropharyngeal cancer this year. Oral cancers most commonly occur in the following areas:

  • Tongue
  • Tonsils and oropharynx
  • Gums
  • Floor of the mouth

To reduce your risk of oral cancer, avoid smoking or the use of any tobacco products, drink alcohol in moderation and eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.
