Today we are going to talk about a very important topic: Toothaches and Sensitive Teeth

RC: Hi Dr. Bielkie, how are you today?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: I’m doing great Liz thanks for having me.

RC: Well thanks so much for being here.

Question 1: What are some symptoms people experience with a toothache?

RC: So let’s jump in. What are some symptoms people experience with a toothache?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Frequently people will describe either a sharp pain or a dull throbbing pain that lingers, temperature sensitivity, sometimes sinus aching or pain that shoots to their jaw or their ear.

Question 2: What are some common causes for toothaches?

RC: Alright and what are some common causes for toothaches?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: By far, the most common cause of a toothache would be tooth decay. So as the decay extends in towards the nerve of the tooth, the tooth can abscess. We can also receive pain from trauma, something as simple as a popcorn kernel stuck between the gum tissues or an impacted wisdom tooth or other trauma to the mouth.

Question 3: When should people see a dentist about their toothache?

RC: And when should people see a dentist about their toothache?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Well my hope is that most people are receiving the proper preventative care and seeing their dentist every six months but unfortunately a large percent of our population doesn’t go until it hurts. I think when anything doesn’t feel correct or it continues to linger, I think seeking medical advice from a dentist is a good idea.

Question 4: Could you explain what the phrase “sensitive teeth” means and what are some symptoms?

RC: Okay great and could you explain what the phrase “sensitive teeth” means and what are some of the symptoms?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Yeah that’s a very commonly used term “sensitive teeth” and it usually refers to pain or discomfort when people are consuming foods or beverages that are either hot or cold. Or perhaps in the winter when you breathe in, you feel that cold quick pain and it’s usually pretty quick and intermittent. And you’ll see a lot of commercials on TV about toothpaste for sensitive teeth and things like that.

Question 5: What are some ways to help prevent toothaches and sensitive teeth?

RC: What are some ways to help prevent toothaches and sensitive teeth?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Well by far, the best way is prevention so trying to prevent the toothache. By the time a person knows they have sensitive teeth, they usually have a pretty significant problem. One of the things is proper home care, brushing and flossing, getting regular professional cleanings. We also find that a number of people clench their teeth and that can really contribute to sensitivity. Clenching and grinding can be helped by an appliance called the bite splint which will help that from occurring.

RC: Okay well thank you so much Dr. Bielkie.  We know you are really busy, so we just want to thank you for your time and help today.

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Well thanks for having me on.
