Today we are going to talk about a very important topic: How Cosmetic Dentistry Can Restore Your Confidence

RC: Hi Dr. Bielkie, how are you today?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: I’m doing great. I’m excited about our topic today.

RC: Thanks, me too actually.

Question 1: Can you please list the various dental procedures that are considered “cosmetic dentistry.”

RC: So let’s see. Can you please list the various dental procedures that are considered “cosmetic dentistry.”

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Absolutely. So the first thing that always comes to mind is tooth whitening, porcelain laminates, porcelain crowns, bonding gaps and things like that and orthodontics. So there’s a lot of ways that we can go about making people’s teeth look pretty. I like to think about things off the radar a little bit –  how about making beautiful cosmetic dentures and implant restorations and specialized custom things that we can do for people that are missing teeth. So there’s always that common porcelain white pretty teeth but how about for people who don’t have teeth? We can make dentures look very beautiful. So we like to think that everything we do in dentistry has something to do with a nice, healthy, beautiful smile.

RC: Okay awesome.

Question 2: What is the most common type of cosmetic dentistry that your office performs?

RC: So what is the most common type of cosmetic dentistry that your office performs?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Probably tooth whitening is probably the most common thing that we do as far as people coming in and wanting a quick response in looking great leaving the office in an hour with whiter teeth.

Question 3: With regard to braces, what are the different types you can choose from and why would older adults want or need them?

RC: Okay and with regard to braces, what are the different types you can choose from and why would older adults want or need them?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Our office offers many different ways of straightening teeth. We have a board certified orthodontist. The big thing now is invisible braces. A lot of adults that are doing braces don’t want the traditional brackets on their teeth so there’s something called clear aligner therapy. There’s a number of companies: Invisalign, ClearCorrect and there’s Essix retainers – a number of ways that we can replace teeth without having to put brackets on the teeth. Traditional braces are also very common. In fact the kids nowadays, I have more kids upset if they don’t need braces than they do need braces because they want to do all the fun colors and it’s really a fun time for them. And we can also use porcelain braces so some people who decide to go with the more traditional route but they don’t want to show the metal brackets can pick white or porcelain braces

As far as the second question, about the older adults. About 1.2 million adults had ortho treatment in 2012 according to the American Association of Orthodontics. So a number of mature people are electing to keep their mouth healthy and instead of drilling on their teeth to do braces or to do straightening with porcelain, laminates or crowns they’re opting to do braces. That’s according to the American Orthodontics Association, 4.6 million kids under the age of seventeen had orthodontic procedures in 2012.

RC: Wow that’s a lot of people.

Question 4: For someone trying to quickly boost their confidence or image say for a wedding or new job, can some of these cosmetic procedures be done in one or two days ?

RC: So let’s see. For someone trying to quickly boost their confidence or image, say for a wedding or new job, can some of these cosmetic procedures be done in one or two days?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Absolutely. So one of the things in dentistry is we do a lot of triage dentistry or as you would think about it in the medical field, emergency room dentistry. So there isn’t a week that goes by that someone doesn’t come in frantic that they lost a tooth or they’ve cracked a tooth or they have tooth decay or they’ve put off treatment that they have known they needed for many years and now there’s an urgent thing that’s brought to their attention, they’re leaving for a cruise or they’re going to be out of the country.

So we make every attempt to get people in the same day and it’s pretty amazing what can be done. Sometimes not the definitive treatment but often your dentist can get something in there and get your smile back until it’s a more convenient time for you to have the more definitive treatment.

Question 5: Do some insurance plans cover cosmetic dentistry or should patients expect to pay out of pocket?

RC: Okay so do some insurance plans cover cosmetic dentistry or should patients expect to pay out of pocket?

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Liz, half of our patients have no dental insurance at all and they elect to have cosmetic dentistry. So each case is very specific and many times if we replace old fillings or old dental work or crowns which are failing over time and replace them with a beautiful new state of the art material crown it is covered under their insurance because the crown needed to be replaced anyway. And if we’re going to put a new crown on, we’re going to put a beautiful cosmetic crown not an old clunky crown with old technology.

So frequently it is covered and other times what is covered is half of what people want and then we’ll always discuss what the different costs will be to give them that million dollar smile. I’ll tell you it costs less than a million dollars.

RC: Great, alright well thank you so much Dr. Bielkie. We know you are really busy so I just want to thank you for your time and your help today.

Dr. Anthony Bielkie: Well thanks for having me on it was a fun day.
